You will learn 3 main job roles Consultants need for initial setup and how to assign these job roles to an Admin User

Today I will take you through the initial job roles required to be assigned to an Oracle Consultant (not end-user) for initial Setup steps of Oracle Fusion Applications.

What is Job Role?

Job Role defines a specific job an employee is responsible for. An employee may have many job roles. It may require the data role to control the actions of the respective objects. Access to subject areas and data depends on the roles assigned to the users.

So basically job role defines a user business function such as Vice President of Sales, Human Resources Analyst, and Procurement Buyer. Job roles and users are synchronized from Oracle Applications Cloud to Oracle Identity Cloud Service. The job roles are mapped as groups in Oracle Identity Cloud Service. You can also create custom job roles based on your business requirements. But in this article, I will take you through job roles which are already provided by Oracle Cloud.

Three Job Roles for Setup and Administration

As an Oracle Consultant, you need to do setups for the company based on the requirements you receive from the company. These roles will enable you to do initial steps for a company setup and to take control of administration access. Mainly these job roles are not assigned to an end-user as end-user gets access related to the subject area he is in charge of. As an example, if an end-user is in Payables team, you will assign him job role which enables him to complete his day-to-day tasks on Payables Module only.

Application Implementation Consultant

The first role is an Application Implementation Consultant. It gives you access to Setup and Maintenance, manages enterprise-wide implementations, collaborates with specific application administrators to implement consistent enterprise application setup, architecture, information, rules, and access. It has access to all setup tasks across all products.

IT Security Manager

The second job role is IT Security Manager. This role is basically for administration access purpose. So what we are entitled to do with this job role? Few examples are listed below:

  • Creates and updates users and assigns roles to users.
  • Reviews and reports security information, including user access and role design
  • Protects assets such as information technology systems, data, and networks.

Employee (Abstract Role)

This job role identifies the person as an employee. Just FYI, that this role is not related to HR. Basically with this role, the user gets access to communicate with the database from the application for data validation. Say you want a specific report. In this case, you request it from database as all data is stored in database. So when you have an Employee role you get access to communicate with database for some data validations, data updates or for any reports that you require.

How to assign job roles to a user in Oracle Applications?

As now we are aware of job roles and their functions now it is time to go to the application and show you how a job role is assigned to a user.

From the Navigation go to Tools> Security Console:

Search a username which you need to add job roles and click on username :

Click on Edit button and go to Add Role:

Now when you search for Application Implementation Consultant you will see 2 job roles with different role codes. You need to choose the one without ORA, as ORA job roles are from older versions. For a new version, you need to go for the one which comes first in a search row (starting with ASM).

Select a job role and click on Add Role Membership:

Now search for IT Security Manager role and add it to Role Membership:

Search for Employee job role and add it to role membership as well:

Save and Close your work. Now the Consultant is ready to proceed with initial Setups for the company in Oracle Fusion Applications.
